What is Healthy Living?
Healthy lifestyle is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or a premature death. Not all diseases are preventable, but a large proportion of deaths, can be avoided
Why is healthy living important?
Living a healthy lifestyle can help prevent chronic diseases and long-term illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, High blood pressure and obesity.
Taking care of your health is important for your self-esteem and self-image.
There is so much involved in this process. However, here are 5 simple lifestyle changes you can make to help you maintain a healthy life.
Diet
A balanced diet is an essential part of healthy living.
Although, eating three healthy meals a day is ideal, it is not always possible to do this.
It is therefore important to consume healthy foods containing fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat free or low fat milk products when you eat.
Eating lean meat and poultry foods such as chicken and eggs also helps in providing the required protein the body needs for a balanced diet.
Water
Staying hydrated is an essential part of healthy living. So how do you stay hydrated?
Taking btw 1.5 to 2 liters, a day of clean water is the standard. This is to be takin over a 24-hour period and not in one gulp.
Staying hydrated is the most efficient way to fight fatigue and keep you alert.
Therefore, take a glass in the morning to kick off your day, a glass with breakfast, and maybe a 75cl bottle throughout the day.
Also, do not forget to take a glass of water with every main meal, and one last glass before bedtime.
Exercise
The WHO has recommended at least 30 minutes of exercise 3 dys a week for a healthy body. Achieving this does not necessarily means you have to register in a gym.
We therefore recommend exercises that you can easily adapt to your lifestyle.
This include walking briskly when you walk or stroll. This works your cardio and supplies oxygen to your brain, which the brain needs to function optimally.
However, taking a brisk walk is not a holistic body exercise, weight training and body resistance exercises like sit-ups, push-ups and pull-ups may be necessary and important especially in slowing the aging process.
Sleep
We all know the essence and importance of sleep in our lives. Maintaining a good sleep pattern keeps the body functioning at optimal level. Here is the generalized and recommended amounts of sleep for different age groups.
Read a book or learn something new every day
As we age, there is a natural decline in our memory, but mental stimulation can help reduce the decline. Reading or learning a new language can help with brain health and mental stimulation. It is important to choose what works for you. This could include listening to a podcast, watching educative videos or learning to play a musical instrument.
